LAKELAND, Fla. — A 6-year-old boy was hit by a vehicle in Lakeland and was airlifted to a nearby hospital Monday afternoon.

The crash happened just before 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Skyview Drive and Marler Avenue.

A Polk County Sheriff's Office spokesperson says investigators don't have many details, but he did say a witness flagged down a deputy after the child was struck. The driver stayed on scene.

The boy was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital as a pediatric trauma alert. His condition wasn't immediately released.

The Sheriff's Office has not yet said whether speeding was a factor, as the case is still under investigation.

So far authorities haven't released the child's name or any information about the driver involved.
