CLEARWATER, Fla. -- There was nothing but open water and clear skies on Saturday, as nearly a dozen disabled athletes learned to sail in Clearwater.
- Sailability taught children with disbilities how to sail
- Lesson held at the Community Sailing Center in Clearwater
- Young athletes took off in access dinghies
Each young athlete was paired up with a volunteer from the local nonprofit, Sailability. The pairs took off from the Community Sailing Center in access dinghies, which are uncapsizable boats that can be adapted so anyone can sail.
The volunteers coached their athletes through the sailing process and the different techniques needed to steer a sailboat.
This was Crystal Molina’s second time sailing. Her smile could be seen almost across the intercostal.
"I just loved seeing the dolphins," she said.
"We gave up racing so we could see the dolphins," her Sailability partner said.
The experience was made possible by a partnership with Hillsborough County and Sailability.
