NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — The New Port Richey teen who was brutally attacked on his way home from school is still recovering.

Geoffrey Lehman, 15, was attacked and robbed by four men in February on Overton Drive while walking home from Gulf High School.

The assault was caught on surveillance camera, leading deputies to arrest the four men involved.

“I still want to know why,” said Stephanie Byrd, the victim’s mother. “Why did they attack him like that? Why so gruesome?”

She says the attack has changed her son’s life. He was only able to go back to school a brief time before memories of the assault came back.

“I think he was remembering things walking home again. It was probably flashbacks,” Byrd said.

The attack left Geoffrey with a fractured gum line and missing three teeth, plus several bruises.

The silver lining, though: Many in the community have stepped up to help him.

Iron Dragon MMA in New Port Richey is giving him free self-defense lessons.

“He’s always wanted to do boxing. Now that’s he’s in it, he’s just learned a lot. He’s progressing well doing it, it’s awesome,” Byrd said.

Byrd says several local dentists and surgeons have stepped up to help her son with his dental work since the attack left him missing three teeth.

Dental Health Services of Citrus Park fitted him with a free dental flipper to take the place of his missing teeth.

In addition, Dr. Phil Hedger with Coastal Jaw Surgery is offering to fit Geoffrey with braces and eventually get him implants.

“They said they wanted to help get his smile back,” Byrd said, though she added it will be a process that will take years.

Deputies arrested four men after the attack. Austin Emmanuel, 21, Justin Schreffler, 24, Khristrian Schreffler, 19, and Trenton Schreffler, 23, all face several charges.

Byrd tells me she plans to be at every court date they have.

"I plan on going to everything I can. I want to make sure they serve time and pay for what they did to Geoffrey.”
