DOVER, Fla. — Preschoolers at Nelson Elementary in Hillsborough County sing a song about safety.

It's a fun lesson the students take seriously, and a lesson they're taking home thanks to the actions of two students in two house fires.

"Called 911," 5-year-old Jayce Kocon said he did after seeing smoke in his house.

That's why Jayce Kocon and Gabriella Rizzitello were awarded badges of bravery by the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Chief.

"An example of two young people at 4 and 5 years old that knew to do the right thing and call for help," said Chief Dennis Jones. "Call 911, call an adult, make very important solid strong choices."

The fire safety superheroes were each the first to alert their families to fires in their homes.

"Next thing I know, my daughter's yelling, 'Fire, fire, fire,'" said Jason Rizzitello, Gabriella's father. He said the fire happened when they got back from taking Gabby's mom to the airport for military deployment.

"It's significant to note Gabby has a development delay and a language impairment, and in spite of that was able to use her big voice, call for help and get 911 to come out," said Chief Jones.

The little heroes got to meet the big heroes and see a fire truck like the ones that responded to their houses.

Their quick action meant safe escapes and little damage.

"I do tell her she's a hero and I'm very proud of her," said Rizzitello.

"Very proud, for him being that young and being able to do that," said Jayce's mother, Briana Kocon.
