PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — The Pasco County Sheriff's Office is investigating an incident at Weightman Middle School in Wesley Chapel after a school resource officer accidentally discharged his firearm.
- No injuries in the accidental weapon discharge
- School deputy placed on administrative leave
- Deputy has been reassigned, Sheriff's Office says
The deputy, whose identity the Sheriff's Office did not release, has been placed on paid administrative leave, the agency said.
The incident occurred in the cafeteria Tuesday when the deputy was leaning against the wall, causing his holstered, duty-issued firearm to discharge into the wall behind him.
No one was injured during the incident.
"His holstered weapon unintentionally discharged while it was in the holster and it struck a brick wall and a tile floor behind the officer," Sheriff's Office Lt. Troy Fergueson said. "We are very fortunate that there was no children, staff, nor the SRO injured in the incident."
Officials said, per protocol, supervisors initiated a full administrative investigation into the matter. The officer was reassigned from the school.
Deputies say they don't keep the safety on their guns on because it needs to be in a ready mode.
