MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — Starting June 10, crews will begin much needed repairs to the bridge connecting Bradenton Beach to Longboat Key.
- Bridge constructed in 1957
- Project will cost $5 million
- Expected to be complete by the end of August
According to the Florida Department of Transportation, crews will be repairing the electrical system and mechanisms on the movable span of the bridge. They will also be repairing concrete beams, sidewalks, railings, and replacing rusted steel.
The bridge was built in 1957. The repair project will cost just over $5 million.
"There's a history of problems with it," said Longboat Key resident Fred Kagi, "So either fix it or replace it."
The repair project will help add a decade or more to the lifespan of the aging bridge. In the meantime, state officials are working on a long-term plan for the area.
Lanes will be closed periodically.
To reduce disruption, crews plan to have most of the lane closures happen between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday-Friday. The lane closures will also affect the sidewalks.
Work is expected to be completed by the end of August.
