The deputy, identified as 41-year-old Christopher Stone, was shot in the leg. His femoral artery was struck and the fast action by his fellow deputies, during an exchange of gunfire, helped save his life.
Deputies applied a tourniquet to Stone's leg and quickly pulled him away from the home on Humboldt Avenue in New Port Richey Saturday morning, action that allowed him to quickly get to Bayonet Point Hospital and have surgery.
"I’m not a doctor. I don’t know if that saved his life," said Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco said. "But I can tell you the probability of him being able to walk and live again is because of the quick reaction of his teammates, the members of the sheriff’s office who put that tourniquet on."
Stone has been with the sheriff's office since July 2017 and is a member of the K-9 Unit. He previously worked with the Dade City Police Department for 14 years in that agency's K-9 Unit.
Stone also has experience as a arson investigator and detective. He also worked in a joint unit with Pasco County Fire Rescue.
A second deputy also suffered an injury as he was grazed in the hand by a bullet.
The suspect in the shooting , identified as 62-year-old Terrance J. Peterson, was taken into custody after gunshots were exchanged and a standoff.
