ANNA MARIA ISLAND, Fla. — It's a sight never before seen on an Anna Maria Island beach.
Athletes from around the globe were dead lifting 825 pounds of converted trucks Friday as part of the Tachi Palace World's Strongest Man competition.
The competition is happening June 13-16, with the final rounds taking place Sunday.
This year, 25 athletes are competing for the title including reigning champion and 'Game of Thrones' star Hafthor Julius Bjornsson, also known as Thor. He was injured Thursday during one of the first rounds of competition.
"He's now competing with an injury," his coach, Sebastian Oreb said Friday. "His muscles are fully functioning but he's in a lot of pain."
Despite the injury, Thor was at Coquina Beach competing in the dead lift repetition competition Friday.
"Now its a matter of pain management. He's still here to win it and we believe he's going to win it," Oreb said.
Qualifying Rounds:
June 14, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Coquina Beach
June 15, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Manatee Public Beach
Finale:
June 16, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. at Manatee Public Beach.
During the final round, remaining competitors will do the loading race, dead lift hold, overhead press, squat lift, and Atlas stones.
This is the first time the Tachi Palace World's Strongest Man competition has been held in the greater Tampa Bay area.
The event will be broadcast in the upcoming weeks on CBS.
