ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- St. Petersburg police are investigating after a body was found in Lake Maggiore.

  • Body found in Lake Maggiore surrounded by alligators
  • Police say an alligator may have played role in person's death
  • The person who died has not yet been identified

The body was found Thursday morning in mangroves in the southeast corner of the lake.

Police said there are signs an alligator may have played a role in the person's death.

"There are signs of alligator involvement," police said in a statement. "Although, due to the condition of the body, it's too soon to know the cause of death."

A group of people eating breakfast in the park early Thursday watched the scene unfold.

"I got nauseous," said Patricia Kays. "I can't believe I'm witnessing a person being eaten."

Florida Fish and Wildlife officials were out in the water hours after the discovery to search for the alligators. Investigators also walked through the shoreline to try to find the individuals belongings.

As of Friday, the person who died has not been identified.
