TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa police are warning residents about a scam involving scam artists posing as TECO workers and subcontractors.
- Robbers posing as TECO employees
- Suspects primarily targeting elderly
- Call Tampa PD at 813-231-6130 with any concerns
The most recent incident occurred on October 7 near the 2900 block of E. Sligh Avenue.
Here's how it works, according to the police department:
- The suspects usually work in pairs.
- Their vehicles do not have anything to show they work with TECO.
- They tell the resident they need to inspect the backyard to survey the tree line.
- Once the resident takes one "TECO employee" to the backyard, the other enters through the front door and robs the home.
- In most cases, the suspects appear to communicate via walkie talkies.
- Elderly residents have been the primary targets.
Authorities want to remind you that TECO workers always carry proper work IDs. You can also contact TECO at 813-223-0800 to verify if the person at your residence is really an employee.
Residents are urged to call the Tampa Police Department at 813-231-6130 with any concerns of suspicious activity in their neighborhood.
