ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A woman pulling into her driveway hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, sending her car into the home and killing a man inside, troopers say.
- Troopers: BMW accelerated through garage, crashed into home
- Man, 2 women related to driver were inside home at the time
- They say 68-year-old driver hit gas pedal instead of brake
The Florida Highway Patrol says Luz Silverio Gomez, 68, of Orange County was pulling into the Chipola Circle home when she hit the gas pedal, and the 2011 four-door BMW accelerated through the garage area and into the home.
Three people were struck: two women who were related to the driver and the 49-year-old man. Their identities have not been released.
The man and one of the women were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he died. The transported woman incurred a leg injury, and the other declined transport, troopers said.
"These kinds of scenes remind you that life is incredibly short and it's a gift," said Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Mark Castleberry. "Our heart goes out to the family — the driver, the husband who was a passenger, and obviously the family and the neighbors have some difficult times ahead and sympathize with that."
Silverio Gomez was not hurt, and alcohol doesn't appear to be a factor, an FHP crash report says.
"Truly unfortunate," Castleberry added. "We are not suspecting anything criminal."
The crash remains under investigation.
