PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — As Pasco County grows, so does its traffic problems.

That is especially the case at State Road 54 and the Suncoast Parkway.

Skye Smith is a Hernando County resident and travels State Road 54 in Pasco on a regular basis.

"Actually I live in spring hill, but grammy's house is in Odessa, so it's our route here," Smith said.

She takes a variety of routes to get to grandma's house, and has noticed a big difference when she uses State Road 52 over State Road 54.

"I've noticed that when you get on to 52, before you pull onto the Suncoast, there's a designated lane to turn before the actual turning lane," she said. "(SR) 54 doesn't have that option and I don't know why."

As the left lanes in both directions of 54 back up to get to the Suncoast entrance ramps, Skye says many drivers take a more dangerous route.

"And then they wait last minute just to get in that left lane. And it backs up traffic so much because if people in the left lane aren't moving and that one car is trying to merge over, now they're blocking the middle lane," she said.

It appears as though there are two issues here. One is enforcement. A staged vehicle from Florida Highway Patrol or the Sheriff's Office at the turn might prevent those center lane folks from cutting over at the last minute.

Then there is the design.

Kris Carson with FDOT says the state has a plan in the works.

"Due to the impacts of the various Bexley residential developments in this area, they were required to construct these extended left turn lanes for both approaches to the Suncoast parkway," Carson said.

The agreement to build the new extended left turn lanes is being finalized now and construction is expected to begin next month.
