GIBSONTON, Fla. — Newly released information is giving new details in a Gibsonton murder.

Deputies found human remains behind a home in Gibsonton Nov. 29. This week, Edgar Martinez was charged with murder.

The victim’s name is Marquise Hassell.

The affidavit details how 29-year-old Hassell was shot in the head and his body was burned, and possibly dismembered.

The investigation began after deputies said Hassell’s mother reported her son was missing. She went to a home on East Bay Road in Gibsonton and reported seeing a partially burned and dismembered body. 

According to deputies reports, authorities they found a shallow hole with what appeared to be a torso wrapped in plastic and then burned. A foot was also found that appeared to be separated from the body.

According to investigators, Hassell was asleep inside the home on November 24. Witnesses report being forced into a room by Martinez when locked inside.

They said Martinez was then alone with Hassell, and they heard a gunshot.

A day or two later, one witness told investigators Martinez asked them for help moving the body and said any evidence would be destroyed by fire.

Investigators detail in this report that they found blood throughout the home. Also outlined here is the day a neighbor found a loaded gun and bullets under his porch.

A witness told deputies Martinez initially gave them the gun to hide asked for it back and told that witness he put it near a neighbors home.
