POLK COUNTY, Fla. — Thousands of Polk County elementary school students will have a new opportunity to read.
- Reading advocate April Taylor started "Books on the Bus"
- Kids now able to access books on their buses
- Area non-profits donated 16,000 used books for program
Reading advocate April Taylor recently started the program called "Books on the Bus."
Taylor purchased 400 plastic bins that hold up to about 40 books. One bin will be placed on each of the 400 public school buses.
Taylor said she was able to secure 16,000 used books for the program by working with non-profit agencies in the area that donated them.
The cool thing is, the students will get to be the librarians, passing out books to one another and reading them to and from school. The students can also take the books home and then return them.
Taylor said she hopes to expand “Books on the Bus” to other Bay Area counties as well as the entire state and even other parts of the country.
Taylor also volunteers as a reading coach at Kingsford Elementary School with her reading therapy dog named Erma. She calls it “Reading with Erma.”
