TAMPA, Fla. — Parents in southern Hillsborough County will meet with school district leaders tonight to voice concerns about proposed boundary changes for next school year.

  • Meetings being held on south Hillsborough proposed school boundary changes
  • Proposed changes will impact the Barrington, Giunta, Mann, Mulrennan, Randall, and Rodgers attendance boundaries
  • HILLSBOROUGH SCHOOLS: Attendance Boundary Changes

The proposed changes come as Barrington and Randall Middle Schools are projected to become overcrowded as early as 2020.

The districts plan includes shuffling students at six middle schools including Barrington, Randall, Mann, Giunta, Rodgers and Mulrennan.

Two of the schools, Mann and Giunta are rated C & D schools, causing parents to question why their kids at A & B schools should be moved.

"Will our kids have the same educational opportunities?”. Said parent Erin Koterba.  “Can you meet their needs if they are really high achieving students and you push them in to a school that is underperforming?”

The Hillsborough County School District is holding two meetings, starting Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Rodgers Middle School to explain the plan and get input from parents.

"We understand that it's hard for families and any sort of disruption is very difficult so we want to try and make that as easy as possible,” said Amber Dickerson, the district's growth manager. “I always say if your kid is an A at one school, most likely your kid will be an A at the other school."

The district will hold another meeting with parents in January.

A vote on the boundary change is expected sometime next February.
