TAMPA, Fla. — This week a group of Bay area pilots committed to helping people in the Bahamas since Hurricane Dorian returned from yet another trip to the islands, their efforts now moving into a new phase.

It’s been more than three months since Hurricane Dorian destroyed areas there. Ever since, pilots who are part of On the Upwind Flying Club have been flying donations and supplies to people in need.

On Monday, the pilots brought supplies to a family and brought a group of people with them. They spent the day at a local restaurant and enjoyed lunch on the beach.

It’s part of the group’s mission to start spending money on the island again to help local business owners.

"The cruise ships are going back. The flights are going back into the Bahamas so just going back and enjoying the island, and the people of the Bahamas want you back," said On the Upwind president Juan Concheiro. "You come back and they're so gracious to want to have everyone there."

Concheiro and other pilots are also now working with individual families to get them specific items catered to their needs.

“Now we can really take in specific supplies for them, so they have kids certain ages so we were able to bring new clothes for them,” said Concheiro.

Concheiro says although conditions are starting to improve, Bahamians still need help rebuilding their lives.

“One thing that has remained is that everybody still needs help," he explained. "And they’re still very appreciative of all the help they can get."

Pilots with On the Upwind Flying Club have taken almost 10 trips. They plan to head back there again after the holidays.
