Tampa - On Wednesday, the Florida House K-12 Appropriations Subcommittee came up short of the $600 million requested by Governor Ron DeSantis to increase teacher salaries.

Lawmakers claimed this is a preliminary step in the budget process.
The governor wants to raise minimum salaries to $47,500.
How do your school district rank in teacher pay?
There's only one school district right now that is in line with the governor's teacher pay raise proposal of $47,500 - that's Monroe County, which pays first-year teachers $47,800.
Here's a ranking of the top five Florida school districts on teacher pay, according to the Florida Education Association.
These are based on teacher contracts with the districts and the teacher's union for the 2018-2019 school year.
Here are the rankings for Tampa Bay area districts.

And again, these rankings are based on starting teacher salaries.
The teachers union also said statewide the median salary last school year was just under $46,000 for teachers with about 12 years of teaching experience.
They said the average teacher salary in Florida for the 2017-2018 school year was $48,168.
The Orlando Business Journal did their own analysis on average teacher salaries that found different rankings, with Sarasota still at three statewide.
Hillsborough shot up to the seventh spot, Manatee came in at 15, followed by Pinellas at 16 and Pasco was 60th.
Seminole County topped Central Florida, ranked 20th in the Journal's study based on Florida Department of Education numbers.
