BRADENTON, Fla. – The City of Bradenton is moving forward with plans to extend the Bradenton Riverwalk more than a mile east.

Here are five things to know about the project:

  1. Right now, the Bradenton Riverwalk stops beside Manatee Memorial Hospital. The new construction will begin at that point and extend 1.25 miles east.
  2. The new extension won’t be in a straight line. Due to restrictions with private land, it will continue south on 6th street and touch Manatee Avenue before hooking back to the Manatee River shoreline. You can see the map here:
  3. Renderings show a pier, pathways over the water, boardwalk, and many places to sit and picnic.
  4. City Council members say this extension is less about creating retail space and restaurants and more about connecting neighborhoods to the already existing Riverwalk.
  5. The project will cost an estimated $7 million and construction is slated to begin in August.
