AUSTIN, Texas — A compilation of nothing but funny cat videos — expect nothing less from a film called “CatVideoFest.”

  • Portion of proceeds will benefit Austin Pets Alive!
  • Screenings will be available in San Antonio/New Braunfels in April

Audiences across the country are joining together in movie theaters to watch the 2020 edition of the film created by Oscilloscope Laboratories. But the screenings are only for a limited time, and there's only one more chance to see it in Austin this year.

"Last year, we had the event and it was very successful and we're bringing it back again this year. And we sold out our largest theater here, so it's a very, very big day for us," said Austin Culp with Austin Film Society.

At the AFS Cinema, it was standing room only as cat lovers congregated to see what the group calls the "best cat videos culled from countless hours of unique submissions and sourced animations, music videos, and, of course, classic internet powerhouses."

"It's a lot of fun. You know, you can watch them here and then go home and just continue watching because, I mean, when can you end with cat videos? When does it ever end?" Culp said.

This event wasn’t all just kitten around — across the country, cat charities, animal welfare organizations and shelters will get a cut of the ticket sales.

"Once we saw CatVideoFest, we were excited to partner up with Austin Pets Alive!, as they'll be getting a portion of the proceeds from the event. It just seemed like a really fun event to bring the community around cats and have a program that benefits a local partner," Culp said.

Jordyn White and her family are just a few of the many cat enthusiasts who jumped on the chance to see the film. White said her mom Genee convinced her and her sister Fayth to see the film together.

“I got a text message and she was like ‘guys, we HAVE to do this.’ So here we are!” White said.

The film showed everything from talkative meowing cats, to felines fond of “making biscuits" — as they say — and even had a whole clip of a kitty trying to find the best Halloween costume.

"It was so random, but so fun!" White said.

"We came in and there wasn’t a lot of people and then we went into the theater and I was like, ‘whoa!’" Fayth White said. "There were so many people."

"Cat lovers! We're amongst our people," Genee White said.

The White family has fostered at least 17 kittens, and are true "cat people."

"I think everybody should try fostering, it is an amazing experience," Genee White said. "It is bonding as a family too."

So when the family heard a portion of ticket sales for CatVideoFest would be benefiting cats in need nationwide, of course they loved the film even more.

"I mean, I wish I could foster every single little kitty that doesn't have a home, every single cat in the world. So that's really awesome, I think that's so creative. What a cool way to raise money for that," Jordyn White said.

And for those who have an aversion to cats, well, this film definitely isn’t for you.

“If you hate cats, you’ve probably met the wrong cat," Jordyn White said. "That's what I tell people."

The good news is that these cats will be back at Austin Film Society for another screening on March 7. Get tickets here.

And don’t feel left out San Antonio/New Braunfels, you’ll get your chance to see the film there in April.
