Findlay, Ohio --Colleges and universities across Ohio have donated their PPE supply to help hospitals in their areas.

  • The items are typically used in science class, but aren't being used right now due to the pandemic
  • The university is also making its own hand sanitizer

College campuses across the state look pretty empty these days, as students attend virtual classes. So, items typically used in science classes aren’t being used.

Many schools are giving those supplies to first responders who desperately need them.

The University of Findlay, in northwest Ohio, is stepping up to help out as well.

“We had multiple inquiries from local hospitals and health systems contacting the university asking if we had any ppe that we could donate because they are in short supply and having difficulty securing additional materials,” said Dr. Debra Parker, University of Findlay.

Dr. Debra Parker is the dean of the college of pharmacy at Findlay. She says the personal protective equipment, or PPE, came from the university's colleges of pharmacy and health professions, as well as research labs, and were given to local hospitals.

“We are not using that material right now. We will again when we convene in the fall, but right now it’s needed urgently in the healthcare system. So we are part of this community and we felt that it was an important thing for us to step up and give what we have to those who really need it right now,” said Parker.

Dr. Parker says during this pandemic, people are feeling helpless and not in control of their lives, so assisting others is vital.

“When we can extend an act of kindness, an act of generosity, and do something that’s concrete and tangible, we feel like we are helping our healthcare providers. That’s a tremendously good feeling. It rewarded us as much as those who were the recipients,” said Parker.

The university is also making its own hand sanitizer.
