TAMPA, Fla. -- People in the Bay Area have some of the biggest hearts, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two years ago, Chrissy Jenkins started "Showered and Empowered," a portable, no cost shower for the homeless or anyone in need of a hot shower.

The idea came to her as she studied for her ministry bachelors degree.

"As I was writing my paper, God knocked on my heart and told me that this was my ministry and he wanted to allow me and give me the privilege to be in charge," Jenkins explained.

Since it started, "Showered and Empowered" has been serving Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. Along with a towel and wash cloth, everyone is given and keeps a toiletry kit which includes soap, shampoo, and conditioner.

"Showers are important to their hope and dignity," she said. "And it helps if they're going for a job interview or a housing interview. So we want to help provide those services where they can feel good about themselves as they're out in the community."

Many other items are also available.

They also added another service a year ago.

"In March of 2019 we began doing laundry for the homeless. To date, we've done over 1500 showers and over 100 loads of laundry," Jenkins explained.

It cost $40,000 for the unit.

A fundraiser on April 19 will be held for the non-profit to help buy a more powerful truck to pull the unit.
