The Humane Society of the Nature Coast put a plea online for help after the burglary on Sunday night. It didn't take long for the community to respond.

For the last two days, the staff has been organizing tons of supplies, all donated from area residents.

“We have not stopped. Since Monday we’ve been here 16 hours a day receiving donations, sorting donations,” said Susana Arneson, Director of Development for the Humane Society of the Nature Coast.

Arneson said 90 percent of their inventory was taken during the burglary.

“They stole everything from generators to lawn equipment to grills to hoses right off the spigot," she explained. "They took our event tents — I mean, everything they could probably get their hands on in a matter of a couple of hours they took."

The Humane Society was already struggling before this happened, losing about 75 percent of donations they usually receive due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But once word got out online of what had happened people were quick to respond, some driving to bring supplies from hours away. Now the nonprofit has even more supplies than they had to begin with.

“There is no words really to describe the gratitude and the shock," Arneson said. "Really I really didn’t expect all of this."

Two people are now in custody in connection with the burglary. The names of the people in custody or exact charges against them have not yet been released.
