This year, the outbreak of COVID-19 is causing students to document their high school experience in a different way.

For example, the yearbook at Seminole High School will feature a special 28-page supplement dedicated to the changes brought on by the pandemic.

"We felt the supplement was important because when you look back on the year 2020, I feel like the virus is going to be the one thing you remember the most," said Lena Conway, the yearbook editor.

Conway joined forces with the editor of the school newspaper, Tori Foltz, and the editor of the school's literary magazine, Kasidy Goller, to publish the supplement.

They came up with story ideas, handed out assignments to their staff members, and started a "deadline dash."

Their teacher Candace Gilbert said students will remember this event probably as much as anything they learned in the classroom.

She said she's proud of her students for documenting a moment in history.

"I think it's important for them to convey what's going on in the world but from a student's point of view and being the voices of their peers," said Gilbert.

The supplement is designed to capture the emotions of these unusual times.

The editors collected pictures, poems, and creative stories.

They highlight the challenges of distance learning, cabin fever, athletes being benched for the season, and seniors saying "goodbye."

"In future years, people can look back and see how it affected everyone and how much of an impact it really made on people's lives," said Goller.

"This may not be a time that we want to remember but it's a time we need to remember," said Foltz.

The yearbooks are expected to arrive in July.
