BRANDON, Fla. — Our latest Everyday Hero has come up with a tasty way to raise money to fight cancer and the reason why hits close to home.

What You Need To Know

Anthony Lewis makes a tasty red velvet cake.

And Lewis learned from the best, his mother, Selina King.

“She made a red velvet cake when we were younger, when we were four or five,” Lewis recalled of his mother’s red velvet cake. “She made it among to family members and church members.”

In July of 2018, King was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a time of great worry and huge medical bills for the family.

So Lewis had an idea. And a question for his mom.

“Can you show me how to make the red velvet cake?,” Lewis said. “And she said you really want to learn how to make it? And I said yes.”

It took a while but Lewis finally thought he had it down.

But what about the “mom” test?

“The first time or two, it wasn’t the best,” Lewis said of making the cake. “She was critiquing. I hadn’t got it just yet. You’re almost there. So after the second try, she said, you know what? You got it!”

So he started a company and called it Selina’s

And as great as the red velvet cake is, Lewis knew if he could have people try it they would love it. And buy it. And that’s just what he did.

“After they tasted it, after their sample, I already know once they tried it they would love it and that’s exactly what happened.”

Now, with a successful baking business, Lewis has raised money to help defray some of his mother’s medical bills.

And with every order, $1 goes to the Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation.

But better than that, King is now cancer free.

“In my wildest dreams, I never thought i would be baking at a stove all day long. It is wild because i really enjoy doing it.”
