“I was asleep and out of nowhere, I just woke up from the gunshots,” Brown said Sunday. “I stayed where I was because I was scared."

The girl said she called her godmother, Lawanda Williams, who was at work at the time, asking her to return back to their Lincoln Road home and protect them.

“She called me at 5 o’clock and told me she heard gunshots and I said, ‘No it’s probably fireworks.’ And then I thought about it and said, ‘No, no fireworks this time of year,’ " Williams recalled. "So then I said, ‘Let me call grandma and see what’s going on,’ ”

Meanwhile, just upstairs, the victim’s mother, Barbara White, says she was shocked to wake up to her son by her bed.

"I was in the bed asleep, and my son opened the bedroom door and said, ‘Mama, call the police. (They) just shot me in my back three times,’ ” White recalled.

White said her son, 49-year-old Reginald Langley, was shot by two men he knows. Spectrum News is withholding their names at this time because at this point, Hernando County Sheriff’s deputies have yet to confirm any information.

“They are kids they grew up with," White said. "I don’t know (if they are) friends, but they knew him because they all grew up together," White said.

She said she heard from others that Langley had a heated conversation with the men, but she denied knowing any details.

Meanwhile, she says, Langley is in stable condition at a nearby hospital.

There have been no arrests yet.
