More than three dozen Ballston Spa school employees were placed in quarantine after a teacher in attendance for an in-school meeting, later tested positive for COVID-19. Superintendent Ken Slentz says those there wore masks to the meeting, but removed them once everyone was socially distanced.
“We’re still working through some of the protocols on health and safety. That’s why this was a fortuitous event,” Slentz said.
He says 24 teachers, staff, and administrators attended the meeting, but contact tracing lead to 42 employees ordered to quarantine. According to Slentz, there has been no additional positive tests.
Currently, guidelines from the state Department of Health are that masks must be worn when appropriate social distancing cannot be maintained at schools. However, it strongly recommends face coverings to be worn at all times even when social distancing.
The New York State United Teachers is calling for that to change.
“But now that individual districts’ reopening plans are coming together, we’ve seen very different mask policies across the state,” said NYSUT President Andy Pallotta.
On Thursday, Pallotta sent a letter to the DOH calling for mandatory mask wearing during all times inside a school. Exceptions can be made for appropriate breaks and medical accommodations.
Pallotta is urging the DOH to look at the latest scientific data and update its policies.
“The bottom line is that parents and educators need confidence that these schools’ reopening plans will actually work,” Pallotta said.
In a statement, a DOH spokesperson says they’re still reviewing the letter, and referred us to its current guidance.
Slentz says masks have to be worn at all times now in Ballston Spa schools. He’s also says nonessential meetings will be conducted virtually. Essential in-person meetings will require masks be worn at all times and a wellness form to be completed before entering.
“These are things we’re going to continue to work on into and well after the opening,” Slentz said.
