Mason Salustro is an active, fun-loving 15-year-old – but he has quite the survival story.

The Jesuit High School sophomore is recovering after being struck by lightning on Labor Day.

Salustro was riding a personal watercraft, about 200 yards of Davis Islands in Tampa, when the bolt hit him.

News of the lightning strike raced around campus.

“I was like, ‘Oh, that’s awful,” said Mason’s classmate, Handen Rix.“And then coming to football practice and I hear it’s Mason Salustro. It was just crazy.”

Members of the faculty were stunned as well.

“It’s been a crazy week,” campus ministry director Jimmy Mitchell said. “Obviously, this entire school community is rallying around Mason and the entire Salustro family right now.”

School officials told Spectrum Bay News 9 Salustro is showing improvement every day.

“I just want him to know that we’re thinking about him,” Rix said.

“We’re all praying for him. We just want him to get better as soon as possible and want to see him back in class.”
