CUYAHOGA COUNTY - Nearly 60,000 Ohio Edison customers in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake and Ashtabula counties are experiencing power outages from wet, heavy snow that fell through the night across the region.
The snow downed trees and some power lines.
• Cuyahoga County has nearly 16,000 residences without power, with the majority of outages in Parma, Orange, Garfield Heights, Solon and Olmsted Township.
• Geauga County was hardest hit with nearly 22,000 residents without power, with the majority of residences located Bainbridge Township. Thousands of customers in the Geauga County townships of Chester, Munson, Hambden, Newberry, Russell and Chardon are also without power.
• Ashtabula County has nearly 5,000 residences without power.
"Obviously, the stress, especially branches and power lines, from the heavy wet snow and ice, as it sits on there longer, it's causing additional branches to come down, additional wires that come down," said Ohio Edison spokeswoman Lauren Siburkis. "Also, we're still experiencing some heavy wet snowfall along the Lake Erie shoreline. So those are all some of the reasons why we're seeing some of those numbers go up."
Ohio Edison, a FirstEnergy subsidiary that serves more than 2 million customers, has a real-time power outage map online - for those who can connect to the internet. The map is updated every 15 minutes and is viewable by county. http://outages.firstenergycorp.com/oh.html
