A Bay Area non-profit is finding an overwhelming need for two wheels.

Bikes for Christ provides new and used bicycles to those who need to get around.

“Eighty to 90 percent of the bikes we have are going out to men,” said founder Pat Simmons.

But since the coronavirus, the founder said they can’t keep up with the demand, especially for men's bikes.

More people are turning to bikes as their primary transportation.

“For the people who have high health risks or don’t want to ride the bus because of COVID, they absolutely need a bicycle to get around,” said case manager Danielle Harris. She regularly connects her clients to Bikes for Christ.

“We do have this huge need,” said Simmons. “We need help.”

Simmons said they have been able to provide some bikes this year. Some have even gone as far as Africa.

But with a national bike shortage, donations are down. He said it’s been a challenge to find bikes for those who need it most.

“Even with the folks who would normally go out at Christmas time and buy new bikes to give to us, they just can’t find them,” Simmons said. “The bikes just aren’t in the stores.”

More need. Limited donations.

Simmons said it’s been tough this holiday because it’s the time of year when most donors give.

Now, he’s hoping more financial donations come to fix some of the older bikes so more people can get around.
