TAMPA, Fla. — Welcome to 9 Questions with…, a new regular feature in which we’ll get to know some of the Bay area’s movers and shakers a little better. It could be a politician, an artist, a first responder, a bartender—just about anyone, really. This week’s subject is Durium Jones, better known as DJ Deacon, who is a veteran of Ybor City’s beloved hip-hop get-together Ol’ Dirty Sundays and has been rocking rooms on both sides of the bay for years. Is there someone you’d like to answer 9 Questions? Let us know!

Are you a Tampa Bay native? If not, where are you from?

Colorado Springs, CO.

How would you describe your job or claim to fame?

I began at USF’s [college radio station] WBUL and from there started booking shows with my buddy Joe D’Acunto. Then I started hosting/MCing concerts with DJ Sandman. Eventually I started DJing and opening up for him, and from there started getting booked on my own. I later became the voice of Ol’ Dirty Sundays at [Ybor City venue] Crowbar.

What’s your favorite Tampa Bay restaurant?

It’s a tie between Rooster and The Till and Ulele.

Do you have a personal Tampa Bay “secret spot” and/or “hidden treasure”?

The Hub. No secret there!

What is your favorite Tampa Bay tradition?

For me it was getting food at Tampa Bay Brewing Company, or a turkey Cuban from somewhere down there and going to the movies in Ybor.

What’s one thing many people don’t know about you that you’re willing to share with us?

Strip clubs freak me out.

If you could change one thing about the Tampa Bay area or your community specifically, what would it be?

Keeping it light and non-political. It would be great to see the Rays in Tampa! I’d also like to see [community radio station] WMNF get more shine (full disclosure: I am a DJ there).

How did you get into DJing?

See question 2.

What are your favorite events/venues to DJ?

Ol’ Dirty Sundays, Jannus Live, The Hub, The Retreat and the big stage at The Ritz Ybor.
