MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — Going into labor isn't a walk in the park, and it’s certainly not easy, especially when you’re giving birth in a parking lot.

What You Need To Know

  • A Manatee EMS helped a mother give birth in a YMCA parking lot

  • The mother, Jamie, and her husband stopped because the baby was breached

  • EMS District Chief Jason Evans was across the street when they called 911

  • Baby Owen was born feet first and healthy

Jamie and her husband, Donnie Nelson, were on their way to Lakewood Ranch Hospital but had to make a detour to the YMCA parking lot.

“We weren’t going to make it,” says Jamie. “I felt like the baby was coming out.”

The complication? Her baby was breached.

”It was pure panic, I don't know, it was crazy,” Jamie expressed.

After calling 911, EMS District Chief Jason Evans from Manatee EMS was across the street.

“We are always cool, calm, collected on the outside,” says Evans. “But inside, my heart was probably going 150 beats a minute by that point.”

Within minutes, baby Owen was born feet first and healthy.

“It was a minute of pure pain, but I knew he [Evans] had him … I felt safe,” Jamie said.

Having a baby requires a lot of planning, but sometimes, it’s the unplanned moments that make the best memories.

“We see crisis, and tragic events so frequently,” says Evans. “But to bring a life into the world, there's nothing like it. It's absolutely amazing.”
