TAMPA, Fla. — This week’s Everyday Hero is about two strangers who became friends and a lesson for all about giving someone a second chance.

It’s a story about a man named Larry Johnson and a man named Rob Willis.

Willis has been a master electrician for almost 40 years and a supervisor for Dematic corporation.

What You Need To Know

  • Everyday Hero Rob Willis reached out and lifted up Larry Johnson

  • Willis met Johnson at a job fair and trained him

  • Tampa Bay Academy of Hope

“We’re looking for all kinds of electricians, put them to work,” Willis said. “Willing to train. We’re willing to put Floridians to work.”

At a local job fair, Willis met Johnson who was looking for work with the help of the non-profit Tampa Bay Academy of Hope.

Johnson had been in prison.

Willis trained Johnson, who did great, learned quickly and is now part of the company as an employee.

There is more to Larry Johnson’s story.

“He got lost in the penal system,” Willis said. “The man did 38 years for a burglary that was non-violent, no weapons. He was guilty of what he did. He had stole but we lost him in the system for a total of 38 years.”

Rob and Larry have become close and Larry is a welcomed when he visits rob and his family.

Rob says all the credit goes to Larry and one other: “To have been a part of this and I have to say that God’s taken control of this, I’m not taking the credit and I don’t want it. I think God has lead me and he’s picked at me and he said, ‘Rob, this is what i want you to do for me.’ and I’ve gone ahead and I’ve listened.”

As I was writing this story i received a text from rob that read: “I’m going to adopt Larry. He’s never going to have to live alone in an uncertain world. I’ll be there to mentor and as a friend.”

“Sometimes people need a second chance in life.”
