ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Nothing beats a cool drink on a hot day, especially when it involves kids, a great cause, and lemonade.

What You Need To Know

  •  9-year-old Caroline Gallagher held her 5th annual Lemonade Stand Fundraiser Saturday

  •  All money collected during the event will go toward child cancer research and treatment

  • Last year, Gallagher's virtual event raised more than $20,000

Spectrum Bay News 9 spent some time at Caroline Gallagher’s 5th Annual Lemonade Stand Fundraiser.

You don’t have to ask 7-year-old Caroline twice about how much she loves lemonade.

“So, so, so, so much,” she said.

For five years now, she and her family have hosted a lemonade fundraiser to support childhood cancer research and treatments.

“It makes me feel happy and excited that the doctors have more money for medicines for kids to get better,” said Caroline.

You’d never know it now, but she’s a little fighter.

At 18 months old, she was diagnosed with Leukemia.

“To hear the cancer word, everything else just goes blank," her dad Charles Gallagher said. "It’s a gut punch, very very shocking. Just trying to stay positive and thankfully she was able to make a full recovery."

While Caroline recovered, however, cancer touched another young life in her family.

Six months after she was diagnosed, her 2-year-old cousin Julia was diagnosed with cancer and lost her fight.

“Pediatric cancer only gets 4% of the national funding, which is a very small amount," Caroline’s mom Danielle Gallagher said. "Especially since pediatric cancer cases are on the rise."

That’s why fundraising is so special for Caroline.

Starting as a small event that raised $50 five years ago, the event has turned into a major donation source.

Last year’s virtual event raised more than $20,000.

“It blows me away at that age she has such a giving heart — just so proud of her," Charles Gallagher said. "She’s going to do so many great things in her life and she already is."

One-hundred percent of the donations go to Johns Hopkins All Childen’s Hospital and a nationwide program called Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Lemonade Days are held each June and thousands of volunteers host most than 2,000 stands around the country.
