PLANT CITY, Fla. — For the third year in a row, Plant City High School won a Special Olympics State Championship for Basketball.

It's a unique victory since the pandemic canceled many games during the 2020 season.

The Unified Basketball team is made up of partners in which a player is paired with a teammate who has a disability.

The Plant City team was just invited to compete for the Special Olympics' National title.

"When you look at somebody, don't think anything different of them cause they'll prove you wrong every time," said team member Austin Davis.

Davis said he never played basketball or even watched an NBA game before joining his High School team.

Through his involvement, he said he learned a lot about sportsmanship and tolerance.

"They've endured," Coach Lisa Goad said, adding that this will be the first time competing for the national title for some players. "Some of them have been on the team since it first came into existence with the Special Olympics and it is awesome for them."

The Special Olympics will be hosted in Orlando next June.
