Millions of people suffering from sleep apnea are losing even more sleep now because of a recall of a device that helps treat their condition.

A CPAP machine made by Royal Phillips Resperonics is being recalled because the breathing device may be releasing toxic and even carcinogenic elements.

Dr. Muhamed Ali specializes in treating sleep apnea in St. Petersburg. Over the last 14 years, his practice has grown because of the crucial importance of getting a good night's sleep.

“If they go untreated, they will develop conditions like irregular heartbeats, high blood pressure, risk for strokes”, Dr. Ali said.

His go-to treatment for the illness is the CPAP machine that’s being recalled.

In an email, Royal Philips CEO Frans Van Houten states, “We are working hard towards a resolution, which includes the deployment of the updated instructions for use and a comprehensive repair and replacement program for the affected devices.“

But with no timeline on repairs, it’s got Dr. Ali losing sleep over how he can treat thousands of his patients.

“We have patients with homeo trophic lateral sclerosis or Gilliam Barry,” said Dr. Ali. “Or patients who’ve been paralyzed. These folks, they have to use this kind of machine because it’s a ventilator.”

Sharon Sterns has been treated for her sleep apnea over the last four years and it has been a life-changer for her, but now thanks for the recall, her dreams of having a restful night sleep have turned back into a nightmare.

“I’m thinking, all these people that are not using the machine or it’s dangerous for them," Sharon said. “It affects their heart. It affects their day and then it affects their family because they’re cranky.”

If you’re a sleep apnea patient using this or a similar device, Dr. Ali recommends that you get in touch with your doctor immediately to discuss alternative treatments.
