SURFSIDE, Fla. — There are many options of comfort being offered at the site of the Surfside building collapse.
That includes a way to help first responders cope. And one of those layers of support has four legs.
Dogs and pups are doing some rescuing of their own.
“The response to this incident has been overwhelming,” said Shawn Campana, Miami-Dade fire rescue captain. “They’re glad we’re here. The dogs make them feel better, they’ve been requested in the MEs area, the guys coming on and off the pile for the families, for the dispatchers.”
The dogs are a part of a program launched years ago after tragedy hit the department.
“About five years ago I lost six people that I cared about very much to suicide,” Campana said. “And I was wondering what I could do to make anything better, realizing I had my dog and something about him. He was very in tune with me.”
And now there are 10 teams of dogs serving as registered therapy dogs and crisis response K-9s. It’s a form of therapy Campana hopes will catch on everywhere.
