INVERNESS, Fla. — Citrus High School and its football team are dealing with a tragic loss.
According to school officials, a member of the school’s football team collapsed during practice Tuesday afternoon. He was rushed to Citrus Memorial Hospital, which is next door to the school, but later died.
On Thursday, his name was released by the school system. He was Antonio Elijah Hicks, 16.
The county’s crisis team and grief counselors have been at the school this week to help students and staff deal with the sudden loss.
In a statement released on social media, the Citrus County School District said:
“We have been in contact with the student’s family and convey our heartfelt sympathy and support as they deal with this tragic loss. Please be assured that we will do everything possible to provide assistance to the family and the students and staff of Citrus High School.”
So far, no exact cause of death has been released.
The Citrus High Hurricanes were scheduled to play at Leesburg Friday night. The school system said Tuesday that Friday's game - along with Tuesday night's JV game - are canceled.
