TAMPA, Fla. — On Saturday, hundreds gathered in downtown Tampa for the Women’s March in support of reproductive rights.

Tampa’s march was one of several rallies held around Tampa Bay and one of more than 600 held across the country. In the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., thousands gathered to show their support for Roe v. Wade.

Four local women who lead a group they call Fierce Tampa Warriors organized the Tampa March for Reproductive Rights. The said the goal was to get their voices heard and rally for reproductive rights.

They are concerned about the recent Texas abortion law and what they are calling copycat legislation being talked about in Florida.

“To see copycat or similar laws being drafted here in Florida, I had no choice at that point. I had to do something and this what I can do,” said organizer Desiree Rochelle.

Hundreds of activists showed up wearing signs and shirts with different messages. They marched along Bayshore Blvd and the Tampa Riverwalk, eventually meeting with another rally at Tampa City Hall.

“True equality can only happen if you have full autonomy over your body,” said organizer Christie Hattersley. “And right now, that’s being taken away. It’s really disheartening and cruel in a lot of ways as well.”

The Supreme Court will hear arguments out of Kentucky this week as demonstrations continue over the Texas abortion law which makes it illegal to have an abortion after six weeks.

The Supreme Court upheld that law for now, and Florida Republicans have proposed a similar law here.
