A viewer emailed Chuck and said: “You constantly (and incorrectly) call large portions of that road as "Memorial Highway." It is not Memorial Highway. Memorial Highway ends (east/southbound) at Veterans Expressway. They do not share the same road sections.”
At first, Chuck dismissed the message but then decided he should take a look.
For help, he went to Danni Jorgenson with the city of Tampa. She's a transportation planner and engineer, or as she said, “I’m a 'plangineer.' I do both.”
“I help to work with our team to figure out how we should invest our limited mobility funds,” she said.
Chuck has always said the Veterans Expressway ends at the spot where Memorial Highway joins, south of Hillsborough Avenue.
In the viewer’s opinion, Memorial Highway ends at the Vets and the Vets continues south to I-275.
So which is it, Danni?
"From our maps, which are consistent with Hillsborough County, it looks like Memorial is just this east/west road, and then Independence kind of loops down, and this is all Veterans right here until it meets with I-275."
So, Chuck says he stands corrected.
The city said at one point Memorial may have gone down to Kennedy Boulevard and the sign at the Westshore Mall may have reflected that.
The sign needs removed and replaced with one indicating the start of the Veterans Expressway.
