ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The days of sitting still during the school day are over for some elementary school students in St. Pete.
At Lakewood Elementary, students are encouraged to move around during their lessons. The idea is that by allowing students to be active while they are learning, they can release energy and stress and focus more on learning.
For the younger elementary school students, they begin their day by choosing what type of chair they want to sit in. Options include scoop chairs, floor mats, and short stools equipped with springs. In some classrooms, the legs have been taken off the tables so students can sit closer to the ground.
For older students, options also include pedal desks, stair climbing desks, wobble stools, or lap desks. Some students also have the option of sitting or laying on the floor.
