TAMPA, Fla. — With police departments across the United States facing staffing shortages, the state of Florida this week started the “Be a Florida Hero” campaign to recruit law enforcement officers.

On Saturday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office held a recruiting event in Tampa.

Recruits could start putting in applications as early as 7 a.m., and physicians were on site until to 10 a.m. to offer free physicals and conduct the required fitness test.

The Sheriff’s Office seeks to hire Hillsborough County deputies or detention deputies.

And it is offering some perks, too, as a way to try to boost recruitment – including a $1,500 signing bonus, paid training and a free medical option.
