No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting but the District Attorney’s office just almost doubled the reward from $5,000 to $9,500 for anyone with information that will lead to an arrest.

“Darnell was a good kid, outgoing – a lot of people loved him,” said his mother, Darnya Barber. “He was only 21 years old when he was murdered.”

Reports show that Darnell Powell crashed at a friend's house that day when several bullets were shot in the direction of the home.

“He was shot four times but they said the first bullet killed him instantly,” said Barber. “It’s still a very hard situation every time we have to revisit it. It’s a no-win situation until we get closure for him; we can’t just let him rest in peace and move on.”

The Winter Haven Police department printed dozens of new yard signs with Darnell’s face on the front to help announce that the reward money has gone up for any information that can help solve this case.

“No one is saying anything; that’s the most frustrating part,” said Barber. “It’s been three years and no one has come forward about what happened to my son that day.”

Barber said that she saw her son a few days before he was murdered.

“He had replaced his ID because his wallet was stolen, he wanted to show me he got a new ID,” said Barber.

Powell’s grandparents join his mother every year around the time Powell was shot to ask the community to come forward.

“Hopefully sooner than later, if somebody knows something about it - they may come forward,” said Powell’s grandfather, Clyde Edwards.
