WIMAUMA, Fla. — Redfoot Ranch in Wimauma is home to red-footed tortoises and a red-footed tortoise super fan — Bill Murray.

He likes all tortoises and turtles, lizards, snakes, spiders, you get the drift!

Murray breeds tortoises and turtles — and will be at Repticon, along with some of his other little buddies ready for new homes.

He takes out little habitats with baby tortoises hanging out — some have stars on their shells, others distinctive black, brown, tan and cream patterns.

“This is a Leopard Tortoise — they are from South Africa,” Murray said, holding up the little life.

Murray says these are popular pets.

In addition to raising babies, he also cares for some permanent resident. We met Allie, a rescued alligator snapping turtle.

“He’s probably about 80 pounds — pretty massive,” Murray said, leaning down into Allie’s enclosure, offering him a piece of fileted fish with a pair of long pinchers.

Allie's head emerges from his murky waters — he takes his meal — and disappears.

“I breed animals; therefore I rescue animals,” said Murray. “I just think its fair to the animals if they get displaced for some reason and they need some place to go, they are always welcome here.”

That’s how he ended up with Shelly, a red-footed tortoise. Murray got her after a lawnmower almost killed her. She healed, but she still carries the scar.

Murray says all this started — the ranch — the 200 animals — the babies — because of his mom.

“She used to send me into traffic to get box turtles out of the road. So you know this was a love that started back then,” Murray said. "And still to this day.”
