Damien Tramel, with Hillsborough County, said there hasn't been a change this significant to waste management in more than nine years.

"About 68% of our solid waste customer base will experience a change in their collection days," Tramel said. "That is approximately 200,000 customers."

The change effects trash, recycling and yard waste collection for residents living in unincorporated Hillsborough County and the New Tampa area. Residents will still have two garbage, one recycling and one yard waste collection.

These changes are due to a new franchise agreement with FCC Environmental Services FL LLC, Republic Services of Florida, and Waste Management of Tampa.

Hillsborough County's Board of Commissioners awarded the 8-year contract in 2021.

In the county's previous agreement, there were five collection zones. Now there are three, which Tramel said will provide residents with more efficient services.

County officials said the change was not the result of problems with collections. While they expect a smooth transition, officials said residents may notice some issues in the beginning.

"We ask for your patience," said Tramel. "These are new routes for new drivers, but all communications are that we're headed in a very positive direction."
