What You Need To Know

  •  Florida Air Tours offers tours in WWII-era biplanes in Brevard County

  •  Mark Grainger founded the company in 2010 after a career as a commercial pilot with Delta Airlines

  • Since starting Florida Air Tours, more than 20,000 people have taken to the sky in tours over Merritt Island and Cocoa Beach

In this week's Florida on a Tankful, Spectrum News explores Brevard County from the skies with Florida Air Tours

This is where you'll find Mark Grainger starting most of his days, in this small old-school aircraft hanger at the Merritt Island Airport that houses his company.

“This is the rudder right here that assists with turning," he said, pointing to the aircraft used in his company's biplane tours.

Mark's love of flying started at the age of 13 when he worked a job at a small airfield in Virginia. He later took that passion and made a career out of it, flying as a commercial pilot for Delta and then starting this touring company back in 2010.

Now more than 10 years later, they've taken up more than 20,000 passengers into the sky over the waters of the Merritt Island and Cocoa Beach.

But what's truly fascinating as you leave the runway is what you're flying in: a restored historic WWII-era Waco UPF-7 biplane, which was used to train some soldiers how to fly during the war.

Now more than 80 years later, this plane is still flying high. Mark says it dazzles guests every time he takes them up, even performing aerobatics over these stellar views.

And back on the safety of land, the thrill and rush of the wind in your hair is still something Mark loves every single time he takes to the sky. It's a passion he loves sharing with others and showcasing the beauty of the area he calls home.

Florida Air Tours also offers helicopter tours of the area in addition to their biplane tours. For more information on how you can take to the skies for this one-of-a-kind experience head to their website.
