ST. PETRSBURG, Fla. -- A human toll has moved to the forefront in Ukraine.

Millions of people are trying to leave Ukraine as the Russian invasion of that country continues.

According to the United Nations, almost two million people have already left the country and the EU is expecting as many as five million people could be on the move during this crisis.

Several Tampa Bay veterans and humanitarians are on the ground in Ukraine with their organization called Project Dynamo.

On this episode of To The Point Already, Spectrum Bay News 9's Rick Elmhorst and Roy De Jesus talk with Project Dynamo founder Bryan Stern, people he helped rescue and Bay News 9 Reporter Gabby Arzola about the Ukrainian situation and getting people safely out of harm's way.

The non-profit US group is working to get people out of war-torn areas, but as Russian troops continue into eastern Ukraine, it's becoming more difficult for the group to perform its mission.

Stern is the founder of Project Dynamo.

The group has spent earlier efforts getting Americans out of Kabul. But now in the capital of Ukraine, it has been mapping underground routes to get Americans out in case transportation comes to a halt.

"I tell them, you're going to be okay, you have one job," Stern said. "Get to me and after that I'll take care of the rest. It'll be ok, when you get latched up with me, you will be safe. I promise.

"If you're not safe, I'm not safe."

Stern went on to say all of his work helping refugees is taking place as Ukraine continues getting shelled by the Russian army.

So far, Project Dynamo has helped get more than 100 people out of Ukraine amid the violence.

"They are doing some great work," Arzola said.
