TAMPA, Fla. — Phyllis Fleming has concerns over an intersection coming off the Selmon Expressway in Tampa.

She says there are too many drivers for the stop sign at Cleveland Street.

What You Need To Know

  • Tampa resident Phyllis Fleming says there are too many drivers for the stop sign at Cleveland Street after coming off the Selmon Expressway

  • She would like to see something change at Cleveland Street — perhaps a traffic light or a speed table
  • Sue Chrzan, with the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority, says there are future plans to expand the exit, and it will eventually have two lanes and a traffic light

Fleming has seen a lot of change in her Tampa neighborhood over the years, especially when the Selmon Expressway was built. It is something she has long supported.

“I love the Selmon,” she said. “I’m thrilled with its addition.”

But with more drivers using it, she feels it is time for the City of Tampa and the Expressway Authority to look at some of the exits — especially the one at Cleveland Street.

Right now, there is a stop sign at the exit, and she feels that’s not enough for drivers coming and going in all directions.

“I’ve seen people try to hit one another crossing lanes,” said Fleming. “I’ve seen people hit one another coming off the exit. Hitting people that have the right of way.”

She would like to see something change at Cleveland Street — perhaps a traffic light or a speed table to help drivers know who has the right of way when coming off the Selmon Expressway.

“I think we’ve come to a point in this particular intersection and in many intersections where attention needs to be paid to how we navigate around this intersection,” she said.

Sue Chrzan, with the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority, says there are future plans to expand the exit. As part of the ongoing South Selmon Capacity project, the exit to Cleveland Street will eventually have two lanes and a traffic light.
