TAMPA, Fla. — It's National Bike to School Day, and in Hillsborough County, a local group is making sure as many kids as possible have a set of wheels to celebrate.

Sidewalk Stompers has nine partner schools in Hillsborough County, and today will be donating bikes and scooters to students at six of them.

What You Need To Know

“One of the reasons we choose to celebrate national bike to school day by donating bikes and scooters, is because not everybody has access to a bike or scooter,” said Emily Hinsdale, President of Sidewalk Stompers.

The donation will include 10 bikes and scooters to students at Broward Elementary, the most at-need school of the nine that Sidewalk Stompers partners with.

Students will meet at a nearby park before school, and then parade to the school to celebrate National Bike to School Day.

When students arrive, 10 lucky ones will receive a bike or scooter from Sidewalk Stompers.

Sidewalk Stompers says even for those students who are not receiving a bike or scooter today, having a choice about how to get to school, even if it’s on foot, is a great way to start the day.

“Whether they are walking, or biking, or scooting, or skateboarding, or rollerblading, anytime they are using their body, they are starting the day on the best foot forward,” Hinsdale said.

Safety is top of mind on National Bike to School Day.

That’s why Sidewalk Stompers will be holding a brief safety course for students before they parade to Broward Elementary to start school.
