MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — A “No Swimming” advisory has been issued for a cove on Lake Norman due to untreated sewage being discharged nearby.

The area impacted can be seen outlined in red in the map below.

County officials say roughly 600 gallons was discharged from a damaged pipe on Meta Road in Cornelius.

“Since this cove on Lake Norman is used for recreation, it is important to inform residents of the discharge and advise against swimming in the impacted area due to the potential risk to human health,” said Rusty Rozzelle, director of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services’ Water Quality Program.

The damage was caused by a private contractor drilling in the area, according to a release, and has since been repaired and is no longer leaking.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services will monitor the water quality until conditions are determined to be safe for human contact. At that time, the advisory will be lifted.
