HAINES CITY, Fla. — This week’s Everyday Hero could possibly be the most popular man in Haines City.

What You Need To Know

He certainly is to a group you’ll find at the local pool.

We visited the Lake Eva Aquatic Center in search of a man called Mr. Johnny.

And it didn’t take long to find John Sirmons, volunteer, native son, former city lifeguard, senior swimmer and a man who has given the senior swim program here quite a splash with his organized aqua movement program.

“There’s nothing more important than staying active,” he said. “Keeping yourself moving and doing something. And that’s what they’re doing. They are doing it and they are enjoying doing it.”

Heidi McIntee is the aquatics supervisor for the City of Haines City. And she says one thing is very clear.

“They all love him. We all love him,” she said. “Mr. Johnny has taken it upon himself to get in the water and get these individuals active.”

About 20 to 30 seniors attend the sessions, and Sirmons said they love the challenge of the workouts.

The summer program ends later this week, but he said he will be back.
